Protect Your Children: Keep Kids Away from Adult Content Sites

The first step in protecting your family is to install a child filtering program on your computer. Some of the best and most respected child filtering programs are CyberPatrol, Net Nanny and Safety Surf. Also, some Internet Service Providers 'ISP' provides contextual filtering as a basic service. Check with your ISP if it offers this kind of service.

Filtering program for kids works by blocking access to specific content on websites. In most cases, when you purchase the program, it already comes with a long list of sites that are not appropriate for children. You can then update the program through the manufacturer's website or in some cases the program updates automatically.

Another way that filtering programs work is by blocking sites based on keywords, such as "sex." However, filtering programs can block many more topics than adult material. You can configure the program to filter topics such as tobacco, drugs, alcohol, violence and racism.

In case there is only one computer in your house and you are dividing it with your children, you can adjust it to filter contexts at certain times of the day during your absence, so you do not have to worry when you are at work and can not supervise their children when they are surfing the web. You can also create a password, which only you know, not to let the system modify any restrictions you have made.

Some programs may also block personal information to be sent from your computer, such as name, address, and phone number. This is a great way to protect your kids from potential online hackers.

Many programs will allow you to create different levels of security and configure filtering based on different ages of computer users. You can give children maximum security by setting heavy context filtering, but when you access the computer, you can adjust it so that it does not perform any sort of filtering.

One thing to keep in mind is that once a filtering program is installed on your computer, you may be restricting children's access to legitimate sites. This statement is specifically true, especially when you block keywords (such as "sex"). Certain keywords appear in legitimate news or information sites, so it is advisable that the settings be configured differently.

Installing filtering programs on your computer does not give an absolute guarantee that your children will not be exposed to inappropriate content on websites. There are new websites popping up every day, so it's very important that your filtering program is always up-to-date. Also learn how your internet surfing program works so you can find out which sites your family has visited (this is a service that provides the "history", ie a list of websites that have been visited).

Talk to your kids about dangers on the internet, and always be supervising which websites they are browsing, that's still the best way to protect them.

Some Internet safety tips for your kids:

  1. Tell them never to provide personal or family information to strangers they may meet online or in chat rooms.
  2. Alert them that it is very easy for people to pass by when they are online.
  3. They can easily change their name, age and sex so they can get close to the kids.
  4. Teach your children that they should never make friends online without the presence of an adult.

Tell them never to send photos to strangers and that they are to leave the computer immediately as soon as they encounter any photo with a sexual context, or something that bothers them, and in case it happens so that they warn you immediately.
Tell them that if they come across someone or something dangerous, they can tell you about it and you will not be angry with them.
